Superintendent

August 2009

Greetings from Beaverton Rural School District,

Soon the school bells will be ringing for the start of the 2009-2010 school year. We, at Beaverton Rural School District, are eagerly anticipating the opening of a new school year. We are home to approximately 1,360 students in grades Kindergarten through 12 th. Our school colors are red and white. Our mascot is the beaver.

Our points of pride include:

  • Preschool Program provided through MidMichigan Community Action Agency.
  • All day, every day Kindergarten which includes a parent involvement program called “Team Time”. Parents have the opportunity to attend school with their child and experience the learning activities of Kindergarten.
  • Transportation is provided for students in grades Kindergarten through 12 th .
  • We are proud of our athletes which compete in the Jack Pine Conference.
  • This fall, we will renew our commitment to “All students can learn” by instituting schoolwide Title I Programs in the Primary and Middle School, credit recovery opportunities in the High School, at-risk counseling services, and placing a high-value on parent involvement activities.

Along with well maintained facilities, we have an excellent staff of teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and support staff workers who work very hard to provide students with rich learning environments even in very tough financial times.

We view education to be a shared responsibility between students, staff, parents, and community. We maintain an inclusive approach to special education whereby if the student’s needs allow for, the student is included in the general education classroom to the fullest extent possible.

Each day we provide high quality learning experiences for every child. We look forward to serving the educational needs of the Beaverton community of learners. Our District does have open enrollment for “Schools of Choice” students and new students from August 11, 2009, to September 11, 2009. This new student registration is held at each of our buildings:

  • Beaverton Primary School, K-3 at 127 Tonkin, 989-246-3040
  • Beaverton Middle School, 4-8 at 440 S. Ross, 989-246-3020
  • Beaverton High School, 9-12 at 3090 Crockett, 989-246-3010

The 2009-2010 school year will bring about a change for me, personally, as I retire on December 31, 2009. I want to take this opportunity to thank the Beaverton and Gladwin County Communities for the wonderful experience I have had first as a Speech-Language Pathologist, then Special Projects Director, Superintendent, and Community Contributor. I have had the opportunity to teach and learn every day with you, your children, and grandchildren. As most of you know, I highly value and respect the charge of public education and that “It does take everyone to educate everyone.” Working with you, teaching your children, and, finally, leading Beaverton Rural School District as Superintendent; I can’t think of a better way to spend a nearly 40 year career in education. Thank you so much.

On January 1, 2010, I will turn over the leadership of Beaverton Rural School District to the very capable hands of Greg Paxton. As a community and school district, you best know Mr. Paxton as the Middle School and/or High School Principal. I hope you will continue the strong community support for him as the next Superintendent to take charge of the District.

Answers to questions or additional information concerning our District may be obtained by contacting the Beaverton Rural School District Administration Office at 989-246-3000.

Sincerely,

Joan L. Cashin
Superintendent
