This document is intended to report progress to date regarding
implementation of Beaverton’s Safe and Drug Free Schools
funded programs for the 2003-2004 school year.
Central Michigan Counseling Services: This program is being
implemented as planned. Pre-tests have been given to those in
the program. Some students are showing reduction and/or elimination
of substance use and increases in school attendance and grades.
Parent participation also shows evidence of positive outcomes.
Character Counts: This program is scheduled to begin this month.
At staff request, this program will not be offered in the 3rd
and 4th grades this year. Planning and setup has proceeded as
expected.
Anger Management (Aggression Reduction Training): This program
has been widened this year to include an offering at the Alternative
Education Program. Pre and post tests have been administered
at appropriate times. Students who have completed the program
note more control over their behavior and several parents have
mentioned a change in home behavior as well.
Club PRIDE: This program is being implemented as planned. Approximately
half of the program is completed. Pre-tests were given at the
beginning. Students are exhibiting excellent participation levels
and are proud to be part of this group. At least one parent
has mentioned that her child has quit smoking since joining
Club PRIDE.
SPARKS Mentor Program: We modified this program this year to
work with an after school at-risk program. We are continuing
to grow and change as we see what works and what does not. The
mentors have been trained and are working with the program multiple
days each week. Pre-tests were administered. Some mentors are
exhibiting behavior changes outside of the program as they learn
to be better role models.
DK Canine: A search was conducted in January. This program
is being implemented as planned.
MAOD and School Climate Surveys: The surveys are scheduled
to be administered in March and we expect to have the data back
in early summer to complete our needs assessment for 2004-2005.
The advisory council met on February 12, 2004 to review this
report and examine where the programs are headed for the remainder
of the school year.
