BUSINESS EDUCATION

 

The fastest growing occupations through the year 2010 include: customer service representatives, computer applications software engineers, database administrators, computer support specialists, and desktop publishing specialists (Occupational Lookout Program, United States Bureau of Labor Statistics).  The Business Education Department is dedicated to providing the knowledge, skills, understanding, and attitude needed to perform in these occupations as well as others in the business world.

 

BUSINESS INFORMATION & TECHNOLOGY I (BIT)

Business Information & Technology I is an introductory course, which emphasizes the technology used in the business world today.  The focus of this course is on computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, database, multimedia presentations, electronic communications and how they are used in the business world.  These computer applications will be utilized as students apply their technology skills to enhance their communications, problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, writing, work habits, career planning and employability skills.  All students who complete this class will exit with a career portfolio, which includes a resume, cover letter, evidence of the technology skills and business concepts they have acquired.  This class is a prerequisite for all advanced business classes.

 

BUSINESS INFORMATION & TECHNOLOGY II

PREREQUISITE: Business Information & Technology I or BEST

 

This class is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment opportunities in today’s changing business environment as well as prepare students for higher levels of education.  Students will further develop their technology skills in word processing, desktop publishing, database, spreadsheet, presentation graphics, multimedia, electronic communications, and web page development.  Students will work toward Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification, a globally recognized standard for skills with the Microsoft Office suite of business productivity applications.  Students will benefit from this training through increased productivity, greater earning potential and more job opportunities in the job market.


ACCOUNTING I                                     10/11/12            Both(1credit)

PREREQUISITE: Business Information & Technology I or BEST

 

This course is designed to give students a better understanding of the need for maintaining financial records for both personal and business use; this class prepares students for business careers after graduation and prepares students for study at higher levels of education.  The content of the course covers the records for a service business organized as a sole-proprietorship, and a merchandising business organized as a partnership or corporation.  This is accomplished through the use of journals and ledgers to prove the accuracy of work and to prepare financial statements.  Emphasis is placed on methods of maintaining and closing accounting records, payroll preparation, tax records, personal records and an introduction to computerized accounting.  This course is recommended for students who plan on majoring in business at the college level.

 

ACCOUNTING II                                     11/12                Both(1credit)

PREREQUISITE: Accounting I with a grade of “C” or better

 

This course offers increased emphasis on the “why” of accounting principles and procedures with modern accounting tools.  Curriculum areas covered include: basic review of accounting procedures, plant assets and depreciation, inventory control, accounting for notes and interest, departmental and payroll accounting, study of corporations, financial statement preparation and continued emphasis in computerized accounting.

 

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT                   10/11/12            Both (1credit)

PREREQUISITE: Business Information & Technology I or BEST

 

This course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in modern business environments as entrepreneurs and business managers.  Students will acquire specific skills related to the principles of planning and organization, finance, management, marketing, economics, and national and international markets.  Students will learn about the different roles of management and organizational structures and electronic commerce.  Students will take an active role in the decision-making process in problems related to management, economics, finance and communication.  This course will include career-specific instruction of entrepreneurs, purchasing agents, financial service assistants and customer service representatives.


WEB SITE DEVELOPMENT                   10/11/12            Both (1credit)

PREREQUISITE: Business Information & Technology I or BEST

 

This course is an overview of web page development tools. Participation in this course is intended to give student an opportunity to develop design principles and skills for publishing documents on the World Wide Web. Students will interact with a variety of web publishing software programs and will work with general design principles to develop a series of web pages.  Students will begin developing a career portfolio web site for personal use and advance to developing and redesigning web sites for business clients.

 

FINE/PERFORMING ARTS

 

CHOIR                                                  9/10/11/12         Both(1credit)

PREREQUISITE: Singing Audition

 

This class is designed to help students develop their voices and learn how to sing in a group setting.  A variety of choral literatures are used.  Students are REQUIRED to perform at various concerts and functions throughout the school year to earn credit.

 

CONCERT BAND                                   9/10/11/12         Both(1credit)

 

Band will be comprised of 9 – 12 graders who have established an understanding of basic music.  Members of the band will perform as a marching unit during football season, stressing the fundamentals of street and field marching.  They will provide pre-game and half time enter-tainment at home football games, promote school spirit and march in parades. Members also function as a pep band during boys’ basketball.  To earn credit, ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED to participate at these games and at various other performances such as District and State Band Festivals, Winter/Spring Concerts, Parades and Graduation Ceremonies.

 

DRAMA                                                9/10/11/12         1st (1/2 credit)

PREREQUISITE: Application and interview with teacher approval. 

 

This class is designed to give practical experience in the field of theater.  Students will be required to participate in one major production and in mini productions.  They will be responsible for all aspects of production: acting, technical and publicity.  This is a one-semester course, offered in the fall only.  To receive full credit, students will be required to participate in after school events and to assist in fund-raising.

 

FUNDAMENTALS OF ART & DESIGN     9/10/11/12         1st(1/2credit)

Students will study the art of many cultures throughout history, experience a variety of media and explore many creative solutions in two-dimensional design and three-dimensional design.  Areas of study will include: drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics.

 

GRAPHIC ART & DESIGN I                    9/10/11/12         1st(1/2credit)

This course is an introduction into desktop publishing.  Students will study the areas of layout, design and photo imagining through the use of computer generated applications.  Students are presented with an overview of both the conceptual and technical aspects of graphic design.  Students will learn image editing and photo retouching.

 

GRAPHIC ART & DESIGN II                   9/10/11/12         1st (1/2credit)

PREREQUISITE: Graphic Art I                                        2nd(1/2credit)

 

Graphic Art II is a continuation of Graphic Art & Design I.  Students will explore typography in greater depth that is stressed in every project.  They will also learn how to integrate text and graphics from many sources into virtually any kind of publication, from newsletters and brochures to color catalogs and magazines to Web pages.

 

INTERMEDIATE ART                             9/10/11/12         1st  (1/2credit)

PREREQUISITE: Fundamentals Of Art & Design              2nd(1/2credit)

 

This course is suited for students interested in exploring interactive and multimedia applications concentrating on elements of visual thinking.  Students will build on skills acquired in the Fundamentals of Arts & Design focusing on new directions, working creatively with two and three dimensional works of art. Areas include: calligraphy, ceramics, collage, silk screen, sculpture and stained glass. 

 

ENVIRONMENTAL ART                         9/10/11/12         2nd(1/2credit)

                                                           

Students will be provided with practical experiences that simulate processes and methods used in the professional world of environmental design addressing a full range of issues that arise in the interior spaces where people live.  Students will design solutions for practical needs.  Areas of study may include:  Designing, creating and installing signs, banners, and decorative elements throughout our school emphasizing sports events, dances and ceremonies as well as community events.
