CAREER PATHWAYS

Career Pathways are broad groupings of careers that share similar characteristics and whose employment requirements include common interests, strengths and competencies.  Each pathway includes career options at all educational levels.  The desired outcomes of Career Preparation are student achievement and ultimate success in the  career(s) of choice. Meeting the career-related needs of students means alignment with career opportunities in authentic work settings.  Career Pathways provide a useful framework to aid both students and educators in making meaningful connections to the working world.  They provide both focus and direction to a student’s learning experience by offering groups of sequenced courses and skill-building opportunities.  The six pathways are:

Arts and Communications: careers related to the humanities, the performing, visual, literary and media arts.

Business, Management, Marketing, and Technology: careers related to all aspects of business including accounting, business administration, finance, information processing and marketing.

Engineering/Manufacturing and Industrial Technology: careers related to technologies necessary to design, develop, install or maintain physical systems.

Health Sciences: careers related to the promotion of health as well as the treatment of injuries, conditions and disease.

Human Services: includes careers in child care, civil service, education, hospitality and the social services.

Natural Resources and Agriscience: careers related to natural resources, agriculture and the environment.

BHS is a Career Pathways high school, meaning that students have access to a career focus when selecting courses.  Starting with the graduating class of 2007 students will have a formal Educational Development Plan (EDP) based on these pathways.

It is recommended that parents actively engage in conversation with their son/daughter regarding careers and course selections.
