CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION

 

Junior or Senior students are allowed to take the following classes through the CTE shared time program.  Students must complete an application the year before they want to begin a CTE course.  The student will receive 3 credits for each 2 hour class taken.  Due to the extra cost to the school district for enrolling students in these programs students are committed to the course for the entire school year, and you must maintain a C- or better in order to receive credit for the course.

 

REMEMBER THESE COURSES TAKE 3 OF YOUR SIX COURSE SELECTIONS.  THEREFORE YOU WILL NEED AT LEAST 3 FULL ALTERNATES ON YOUR REQUEST SHEET.

 

AGRISCIENCE                                      11/12                Both (3credits)

 

The program introduces students to the dynamic agriscience industry.  Students will be involved in practical applications of in landscaping, farm production, and turf management.  Core training areas include basic equipment operation, plant identification, propagation, culture requirements for plant growth and landscaping skills.

 

 

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY I              11/12                Both(3credits)

 

Students study automotive brake and basic electrical systems.  Skill development focuses on diagnosis and repair of drum, disc, hydraulic, power assist, and anti-lock brake systems as well as electronics, voltage, current, resistance, series and parallel circuits, magnetism, application of Ohm’s Law, and wiring diagrams. This course is designed to improve communications, math, decision-making, thinking, reading, writing, ethics, team building skills and safety attitudes. Math and reading are a large part of this program. Students successfully completing the course will be prepared to take state certification exams in brakes and electrical and continue toward further certifications or a degree in an Automotive Field.  A grade of “B” or better will result in articulation in the MMCC Automotive Technology program.  Be aware that your own driving record may influence your ability to work in the automotive repair field.

 

 

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY IIdual enrollment                                                                                

                                                            12                     Both(3credits)

 

Students who have completed Automotive Technology I will be eligible to continue taking courses through MMCC as a college student.  This will require the student to follow MMCC’s application process.  This will begin with an assessment/orientation in April/May.  Contact the BHS Guidance Office for more details.  Students who complete this course will receive both high school and college credit.

 

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGIES   11/12    Both(3credits)

Junior Year and Strong Math/Science background recommended.

 

The program explores high tech areas of computers, including hardware and software, networking, repair, maintenance, ethics and new technologies. Student experiences include computer assembly, troubleshooting, LANs, WANs, wireless networking and programming. The program includes a large amount of technical reading and writing. Students successfully completing the course will be prepared to take various certification exams and continue toward an associates or bachelors degree in Computer Information Systems (CIS).  It is possible to earn college credit while completing this course.

 

CONSTRUCTION TRADES                     11/12                Both(3credits)

 

Students gain skills in new construction, erection of wall sections, installation and maintenance of residential buildings and related fixtures. Alternations and repairs of existing structures are also covered.  Learning activities allow students to become knowledgeable in fundamental principles and methods of construction, and to develop technical skills related to carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, and finish work.

Instruction includes safety principles and practices; recognition of standard lumber sizes; foundation layout methods; building concepts and procedures; local, state, and national codes; cost estimating and blueprint reading.  The curriculum focuses on students becoming familiarized with safety practices and the proper use of both hand and power tools.  Instruction is provided in theories and techniques used in the construction field.

Planned activities include possible coordination with Habitat for Humanity and site construction.  There is a high demand for carpenter apprentices in our local area.

 

COSMETOLOGY (NEW)                           11 ONLY        Both(3credits)

 

This is a 2 year program open to juniors only.  Acceptance into the program will require attendance during the summer and some financial payment by the student.  Students taking Cosmetology program will gain the knowledge, skills and abilities for successful and rewarding career as a licensed cosmetologist.  The program covers the basic principles of cosmetology which includes bacteriology, sanitation, hairdressing, manicuring, facials, scalp &hair treatments, hair color, chemical restructuring, anatomy & physiology, chemistry, art principles and patron protection as applied to each unit of instruction.  As a result of the 1600 hours of theory and practical training, students should be able to pass the sate licensing exam.

 

 

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION             11/12             Both(3credits)

 

Students will prepare for entry-level positions as child care aides and nannies. The course could also lead to positions as childcare provider or teacher as well as a host of additional related career opportunities.

In the classroom setting, students will learn childcare principles and procedures and have various hands-on experiences in local childcare centers, schools and day-care homes. Course includes a large amount of reading and writing.  It is possible to earn college credit while completing this course.

 

GRAPHIC ARTS TECHNOLOGY 11/12    Both(3credits)

 

This program focuses on providing the student foundation skills in Creative digital image development and production to apply to a wide variety of related careers. Focus of the class is on graphic design with layout and illustrative techniques for print and digital media. Students will experience print production and management through field experiences. Career Possibilities: Graphic Design, Interactive/Web Design, Printing, Illustration, Digital Photography, Animation and Advertising.

 

 

HEALTH OCCUPATIONS                       11/12                Both (3credits)

 

This course is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in acute care, long-term care, home healthcare agencies and clinic positions.  The curriculum addresses the fundamentals of care giving and job skills necessary for a variety of healthcare positions. Clinical experiences include nursing homes, hospitals, pharmacies, veterinary offices, dentists, physicians' offices, and rehabilitation centers.  The program is divided into 3 components: lecture, laboratory, and clinical experience. Science, math including metrics, and reading are a large part of the course.  If students are successful in completing all of the Core Curriculum they are eligible for CNA or Nurse Aide Certification. It is possible to earn college credit while completing this course.

 

HOSPITALITY/FOOD SERVICE              11/12                Both (3credits)

 

Students have the opportunity to learn various aspects of the food service industry and gain real-world experience.  Various areas of culinary arts are explored, grade manager, fresh pasta cook, pantry cook, line cook, bakery, sanitation, dining room and deli attendant.  Students learn safe food handling and with successful completion of the test will be Safe Serve certified. The course is designed to prepare the student for entry-level positions including cooks, servers, cook's assistants and manager trainees.  Additional areas of exploration include; care and use of commercial food service equipment, nutrition and various food units.

 

ACADEMY OF MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY          11/12    Both (3credits)

The program will track motivated and self-directed students through blended learning modules consisting of hydraulics, pneumatics, robotics, PLC’s, fundamentals of electrical applications, electronic controls, and a host of other industrial technology coursework. Math including metrics, Science, and reading are a large part of the course.  This course is held at the Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TEC).  Students successfully completing the course will receive Learning Module Certifications and can continue toward a degree in Engineering or Manufacturing.

 

MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY         11/12                Both (3credits)

Strong Math/Science background recommended.

 

(CAD & Machine Tool sections rotate approximately every 4 weeks.)

COMPUTER ASSISTED DRAFTING (CAD): The course acquaints students with Computer Assisted Drafting Systems (CAD) and their use as Engineering Design Tools.  The student develops drafting visualization skills. Use of industry symbols, line representation, dimensioning and tolerancing standards applicable for the creation of engineering type working drawings and illustrations used by the manufacturing and construction industries is practiced.  Laboratory assignments include detail drawings, from which the student will make actual parts in the Machine Lab.

MACHINE TOOL: This course shows the relationship of CAD to Machining and introduces the student to the machinists' trades.  Students utilize blueprint reading skills learned in the CAD class to develop basic competency of the cut-off saw, drill press, lathe, milling machine, surface grinder and pedestal grinder.  Safe operation precision measurement, layout, hand tool usage and process planning skills are developed along with the ability to communicate concepts associated with industrial manufacturing.  It is possible to earn college credit while completing this course.

 

PUBLIC SAFETY/CRIMINAL JUSTICE     11/12                Both (3credits)

The program addresses security guard work, corrections, private investigator, firefighter, emergency medical technician and attorney or judge. The focus of the course is on law enforcement. The instructors are police officers and teach topics such as; fingerprinting, report writing, domestic and stalking laws, search and seizure, OUIL and First Responder. Material is presented through a textbook, videos, lecture, activities and guest speakers. The course covers law enforcement from the hiring process to employment, then from employment to on duty tasks.  It is possible to earn college credit while completing this course.

 

WELDING                                 018/19  11/12                Both (3credits)

Basic Welding introduces students to the fundamentals of OFW oxy-fuel cutting and OFB brazing, (SWAW arc welding), GMAW MIG welding, and GTAW TIG welding. This course includes a large amount of math and reading. Emphasis is placed on penetration welds in all positions according to the American Welding Society.  The course stresses metal fabrication techniques and standards.  Students will learn blue print reading and non-destructive and mechanical testing techniques.  The course is designed to prepare students for an appropriate career in welding. It is possible to earn college credit while completing this course.

CO-OP TRAINING PROGRAM                12                     Both(2credits)

PREREQUISITE: Completed application, Resume¢, and Approval of the Coordinator

 

Cooperative Education (Co-op) is a method of instruction where students receive integrated instruction in the classroom and during a part-time job through written cooperative agreements between the school and employers.  Co-op is not a means of just “getting out of school to work”.  Co-op jobs must be educational and career-related.  Co-oping is a wonderful experience and a privilege granted to seniors who have a strong commitment to education and work performance excellence.  Co-op students must be enrolled in a vocationally-related class.  The co-op coordinator must approve all jobs and related classes.  Co-op students are required to submit hour reports and written assignments weekly. Applications are accepted in the spring of the junior year.

 

 DUAL ENROLLMENT                             11/12                                                                          

 

Juniors/Seniors students enrolled in the district’s high school that have taken the MEAP test may take classes through a Michigan post-secondary institution, via campus or virtual correspondence, and have part or all of the tuition and fees paid by the district. 

 

Students are committed to the course for its duration.  The dual enrollment law states that, “The student must receive a passing grade or credit in the class or may be required to reimburse the tuition”.   Dropping/failing a class will result in a grade of an E for your high school transcript, as well as starting your college g.p.a. at 0.00.

CADET                                                 11/12                Both(1/2credit)

 

A cadet will assist in either the classroom or office based on choice of schedule. A cadet must have regular attendance and be mature enough to handle responsibility.  Choices for this class include office cadet, teacher cadet, or counseling office cadet. The area that the student cadets in must coincide with their career goals and must be identified on their EDP (and on file).  Prior approval with either a teacher or office is needed before signing up for this class.
