LIFE MANAGEMENT EDUCATION

The Life Management department encourages and supports the quality, growth and stability of the family unit through the development of each member as a responsible, independent individual. 

We will assist each individual in attaining his/her maximum potential through the development of (1) essential living skills needed to survive on a day-to-day basis; (2) human relations including parenting skills; (3) consumer skills including obtaining, allocating and conserving resources; (4) career exploration skills; and (5) life management skills needed to meet the multi-role functions of each individual through his/her life cycle.

 

FOODS AND NUTRITION I                      9/10/11/12         1st (1/2credit)

This course is based on a physical fitness focus through the application of nutrition as it relates to food selection, food habits, and quick and simple food preparation.  Planning and working within a group, proper measuring techniques, following recipes, kitchen management and basic nutritional knowledge are stressed.

 

FOODS AND NUTRITION II                     9/10/11/12         1st (1/2credit)

PREREQUISITE: Foods and Nutrition I                            2nd(1/2 credit)

 

This class will build on information from Foods & Nutrition class.  Students will learn to plan and prepare more detailed and challenging foods.  Garnishes and presentation will be stressed.  Students will explore a wide range of culinary arts careers.

 

FABRIC APPLICATION                          9/10/11/12         1st (1/2credit)

The student will learn to use and care for a sewing machine, as well as complete a variety of samples & textbook assignments.  Use of patterns, as well as creating individual design will be explored.  Daily participation is an important part of the course grade.

 

CHILD DEVELOPMENT                         10/11/12            1st (1/2 credit)

This course leads students in a study of the development of the child from conception through five years of age.  The emphasis is on parenting skills—caring for children and helping them grow and learn.  Students will study the physical, intellectual, social and emotional development of children as well as their care and guidance.  Actual experience in working with pre-school and elementary age children is included as part of the program. The “Baby, Think It Over” simulation is an optional activity the student may explore as part of this course.


FAMILY LIVING                                     10/11/12            2nd(1/2credit)

 

This course focuses on how individuals develop and change across the life cycle.  Communication, decision making, consumer skills, dual income families, marriage, abuse, divorce, remarriage, death, parenting and interpersonal relations are topics which will be explored.  Students have the option to participate in a “Baby Think It Over” parenting simulation.

 

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION I                       9                      1st (1/2credit)

The purpose of P.E.I is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, fitness and attitudes necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle.  Lifetime sports are emphasized in order to expose students to a variety of uses for leisure time later in life.  Students will study the concepts of fitness and apply these concepts through conditioning and participation in sports.  Students will learn the value that sports have in improving the quality of their lives. 

 

HEALTH                                                9                      1st (1/2credit)

In the health section, students will learn how to improve the quality of their lives by making healthy lifestyle choices.  They will study the cause and effect of diseases and disorders with an emphasis on prevention.  The following topics will be covered: managing stress, nutrition, lifelong fitness, reproduction, substance abuse, personal safety and selecting health care.

 

ADVANCED PHYSICAL ED                    10/11/12            1st (1/2credit)

This class is a continuation of P.E.I.  The purpose of this advanced class is to enable the student to gain an understanding of the skills necessary for promoting personal health status by means of physical activity.  A greater emphasis will be placed on lifetime sports and fitness activities.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

INDUSTRIAL ARTS

 

Due to the continuing high demand for industrial arts classes, the following requirements and guidelines will be followed by students who enroll in these classes.

 

1.         Students will follow the well-defined safety rules and operating procedures established for all Industrial Arts classes.

2.         Students will be required to purchase and wear safety glasses protecting their eyes during laboratory working sessions as determined by the instructor.

3.         The cost of materials and supplies for non-required or additional projects will be the responsibility of the student.

4.         Students are advised to dress appropriately for all inclement weather when enrolled in machine shop as they are required to walk to the class every day.

 

INDUSTRIAL ARTS I                              9/10/11             Both (1/2 credit)

 

This class will introduce the student to some of the skills and techniques that are important to the operation of industry.  Through both classroom and laboratory instruction, students will gain an understanding of basic operations related to the planning, manufacturing, assembling and final construction in the areas of woods and drafting.  Emphasis will be placed on hand tools, power tool safety, and proper operational procedures—which lead to skills needed in advanced industrial classes.  Additional topics covered are: shop math, blueprint reading and illustration.

This is a two-part class introducing the student to woods and metals.

 

WOOD TECHNOLOGY I                         10/11/12            Both(1credit)

PREREQUISITE: Industrial Arts

 

At the completion of the classroom and laboratory experiences the student will be able to perform, with confidence, the major operation of the table saw, jig saw, jointer, lathe, portable router, surface plane, etc.  Study will include being able to identify the different types and uses of wood.


WOOD TECHNOLOGY II                        11/12                Both(1credit)

PREREQUISITE: Teacher Approval

 

This course is a continuation of Woods I and is mostly a laboratory experience.  This enables the student to put into practice what the student has learned. The class will study design, joints and finishes in depth.
