Mr. Devlin's BHS Site

Hi!,

As you have already deduced, you have reached Mr.Devlin's Home Page.

To begin, I guess that I'll start with a short biography about myself.

I was born, (yes, born and not spawned, as some of you suspect), in Staten Island, New York City (No, not Hell's Kitchen!), in 1946. I am the oldest of three, having one brother and one sister.Thankfully, they are both normal.(Hey,two out of three isn't bad!).

I attended the usual elementary and secondary schools, graduating from high school in January, 1965. After working in a lumber yard and the U.S. Post Office, I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force,on April 13th,1966.(Tempting fate, yes,it WAS Friday the 13th!).I went through Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas. This was followed by Tech School , at Keesler Air Force Base,in Biloxi, Mississippi. Upon graduation from Tech School,I was a Radar Technician (a.k.a., "Scope Dope"). I was the assigned to the 754th Radar Squadron,in the "wonderful" state of Michigan, at Port Austin, in the "Thumb".After being assigned there, due to a clerical foul-up, I remained at Port Austin for the remainder of my tenure with the Air Force, being Honorably discharged on April 12th,1970.

While stationed in Port Austin, I began to take Off-Campus college courses.Over a three-year period of time, I completed 27 hours of course study, i.e., my Freshman year.

Then, using my G.I.Bill, I enrolled at Central Michigan University, from 1970-1975, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. I accumulated two Majors, i.e., English and Social Studies/History, and a Minor in Physical Education. I continued on with my education, falling short of a Masters in Athletic Administration by a credit/no credit Master's thesis.

My teaching career began at Sacred Heart Academy, in Mt. Pleasant, MI, from 1974-1976, where I was Athletic Director, Yearbook Advisor, and taught English and Government/Econ. After having been replaced by a nun, in 1976, I came here to Beaverton High School.I taught here for five years (1976-1981),before losing my job in a mass layoff of instructors and counselors. Then, I got a teaching job at Copan High School, in Copan, OK, for the next eight years (1981-1988). I lived in Caney, Kansas, during this stint. Ah, it was "wonderful"living among the cowboys, deer, and antelope! After eight years, I was rescued and returned here,in 1988, and have been teaching in Beaverton High School ever since.

In the course of my 31-year teaching and coaching career, I was an Athletic Director, at Sacred Heart Academy, for two years (1974-1976).Then, here at Beaverton, I coached Varsity Softball for three years (1977-1980), and Varsity Baseball for one year(1980-1981).In Oklahoma, I coached Varsity Eight-Man Football for three years (1981-1983), and Varsity Baseball,(1983-1988). Upon my return to Beaverton, I coached Varsity Volleyball for nine years (1988-1997). Then, I decided that I had to attempt to save what little sanity I had left, and gave up coaching.

In my spare time, I am an avid Bass fisherman, belonging to a little local Bass club, The Wixom Lake Bass Anglers.I was an original member and I've been in the club since its inception, in1988.I have a small fishing boat that allows me to get out on the water of the smaller local lakes.

In the summers, I "relax" by umpiring Women's Slow-Pitch Softball. I have been umpiring for most of the years since I began umpiring Intermurals while in college.

I was married in 1969, while in the military.I was divorced in 2002. I have two children, both daughters, i.e. Misti, who is 30, married, and living in San Diego, CA.She has two boys, my grandsons, Zack, who is 7 and in 2nd Grade, and Kaleb, who is 2 1/2. My other daughter is Mandi. She is 20 and is living in Midland ,MI.

Future plans? To retire in five more years, giving me a total of 36 years of teaching (and, again, still half-sane). Then, either stay in Beaverton, which has become my home over the years, or move to Perth, Australia.(Just me and the kangeroos!). Also, Costa Rica is in the running.(You can swim in the Caribbean, in the morning, and the Pacific, in the evening!).

Well, that about covers the wonderful and thrilling (?) life of ME, Mr. Devlin. I hope that you're still awake!
