Virginia Ross Chapter

NHS Constitution

ARTICLE I

NAME AND PURPOSE

Section 1.         The name of this chapter shall be the Virginia Ross, which appears on thre charter granted by the National Council of the National Honor Society, duly signed by the members of the National Council.

Section 2.         The purpose of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage development of character among students at Beaverton High School.

Section 3.         This chapter shall be under the sponsorship and supervision of the National Association of Secondary School Principals,

ARTICLE II

THE PRINCIPAL

Section 1.         The principal shall reserve the right to approve all decisions and activities of the chapter.

Section 2.         The principal shall oversee the selection, coaching and monitoring of the advisor and the faculty council.

Section 3.         The principal shall review and support decisions made by the advisor and the faculty council.  The principal will insist upon communication and review for solid foundations for accepting and denying student admissions to NHS.

Section 4.         The principal shall support the ideals strived for by NHS insisting

 

 

ARTICLE III

THE CHAPTER ADVISOR

Section 1.         With the principal, the advisor will decide upon the make up of the faculty council.  The advisor will then hold an orientation session for all faculty council members to explain their duties.

Section 2.         Council those students whose membership requests were denied.  Communication with both the student and the parent will then transpire.

Section 3.         The advisor shall be required to oversee the sending of a letter to parents of freshmen and of potential members explaining the membership requirements of NHS.

Section 4.         The advisor will oversee the participants of NHS in the open houses for interested students and parents.  The advisor will also oversee the creation of a pamphlet using real examples to help explain NHS membership requirements.

Section 5.         The advisor will explain the constitution to all new members.

Section 6.         The advisor shall notify all students who have qualified for NHS on the basis of scholastic achievement.  A student profile packet will be provided to those interested in providing additional information for consideration.  The advisor will then conduct a meeting where members and faculty can assist students with  completing packets.

Section 7.         The advisor will oversee at the induction ceremony.

Section 8.         The advisor will assist members in fulfilling their duties including membership service requirements,

Section 9.         The advisor will hold monthly meetings during the school year.

Section 10.       The advisor will fill in the yearly report and send it to the National Council.

Section 11.       The advisor will counsel any members who are below acceptable standards in any areas.  The advisor will also review internal and external disciplinary actions involving members and initiate appropriate disciplinary actions.

Section 12.       The advisor will attend one meeting at the Michigan NHS chapter per year.

ARTICLE IV

THE FACULTY COUCIL

Section 1.         The faculty council will consist of five members of the high school staff chosen by the advisor and the principal.

Section 2.         The faculty council will attend the review session covering the selection process and the duties the council is expected to perform.

Section 3.         The faculty council will participate in the selection meeting and be prepared to present supportable positions for accepting or denying admission to a student.

Section 4.         The faculty council may be asked to review the selection process and offer suggestions for improvement and change.

Section 5.         The faculty council will review disciplinary cases involving the membership.

ARTICLE V

MEMBERSHIP

Section 1.         Membership in this organization shall be based upon Service, Scholarship, Character, and Leadership.

Section 2.         Students may be chosen as members in the middle of their sophomore through senior year if they satisfy all the requirements.  Members will be inducted in the spring of the year.  Such members shall have voice and vote in the chapter.

Section 3.         Candidates shall have attended at least one semester in Beaverton High School and shall be members of the sophomore, junior, or senior class.  Candidates are eligible for selection to the chapter if they achieve at least a cumulative 3.3 GPA.  All students in the sophomore, junior, and senior classes who can achieve this standard in scholarship and complete the student profile shall then be considered on Service, Leadership, and Character.

Section 4.         The selection of members to this chapter shall be faculty council.

Section 5.         A member of the National Honor Society who transfers to this school will automatically be accepted for membership in this chapter with a written letters/records from the previous school.  This member must maintain membership requirements for this chapter and abide by its constitution to retain membership.

Section 6.         The National Council and NASSP shall not review the judgement of the faculty council regarding the selection of members.

ARTICLE VI

MEMBERSHIP DUTIES

Section 1.         Members must attend monthly meetings.  Three unexcused absences will be cause for dismissal from the organization.  Examples of excused absences are school-related functions, doctor notes, emergencies or parental call on sickness.

 

Section 2.         Members shall serve on at least one sub committee.

 

Section 3.         Members shall participate in at least three NHS sponsored events.

 

Section 4.         Members shall participate in the induction ceremony.  Members shall also plan and conduct the honors’ assembly at the end of the school year.

 

Section 5.         Members shall tutor throughout their entire NHS involvement.

 

Section 6.         Members shall continue academic excellence, maintaining at least 3.3 cumulative GPA.

 

Section 7.         Members shall provide a continued example of positive student leadership and school spirit.

 

Section 8.         Members shall perform 15 hours of service for every year they are a member of NHS or face disciplinary action.

 

 ARTICLE VII

OFFICERS AND SUBCOMMITTEES

 

Section 1.         The officers of this chapter shall be:

·        President (senior)

·        Vice President (junior who will be president next term)

·        Secretary and Assistant Secretary

·        Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer

·        Student Government Representative

·        Historian

·        Reporter

·        Activities Coordinator

·        Orientation Supervisor

 

Section 2.         A majority of votes cast shall be necessary to elect the Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer to the chapter.  The system of choosing the remaining officers is at the discretion of the advisor.

 

Section 3.         It shall be the duty of the President to preside over all meetings of the chapter, call special meetings and coordinate with the advisor.

Section 4.         The Vice President shall fill the chair of the president in his or her absence and carry out assigned duties.  The Vice President shall be a junior and will move to the position of President at the end of the current school year.

 

Section 5.         The Secretary shall keep the minutes of the meetings.

 

Section 6.         The Treasurer shall establish a budget, receive and construct all purchase orders of the chapter and shall keep an accurate account of funds.

 

Section 7.         The Student Government Representative shall attend all meetings of the Student Government to report all NHS activities or be responsible for appointing a replacement.

 

Section 8.         The historian will keep a scrapbook detailing all the activities of the NHS.

 

Section 9.         The Reporter will report all meetings and events to the newspaper for pubic viewing and information.  All articles will first be submitted to the advisor for approval.

 

Section 10.       The Activities Coordinator will keep a calendar of NHS and other school sponsored events and notify committees of any possible problems.

 

Section 11.       The Orientation Supervisor shall oversee the orientation committee.  This group is responsible for planning and conducting of NHS orientation for sophomores, juniors, and  any potential applicants.  The committee will also supervise the meeting to help potential members fill out their student profile forms.

 

 

MEETINGS

 

Section 1.         The regular meetings of the chapter shall be held monthly during the school year.

 

Section 2.         Special meetings shall be called as needed by the President as approved by the advisor.

 

Section 3.         All meetings shall be under the supervision of the chapter advisor or the principal.

 

Section 4.         All members are to attend the meetings.  Any three unexcused absences are grounds for dismissal.

 

 

 ARTICLE IX

EMBLEM

 

Section 1.         Each member shall be entitled to wear the emblem adopted by the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools.

 

Section 2.         All insignias must be procured from the National Secretary of the National Honor Society, 1201 Sixteenth Street, N.M. Washington D.C.

 ARTICLE X

DISMISSAL

 

Section 1.         A member must maintain the standard for membership.  Any member of this chapter who falls below the standards which were the basis for his acceptance shall be promptly warned.  A member will only be given one warning.  If during the next regular semester of the school year, the member fails to meet the requirements for membership, his case shall be ruled upon by the chapter advisor, the faculty council, and the principal.  Once a member resigns or is dismissed, (s)he must turn in membership card and emblem and may never return to membership.

 

Section 2.         Members who are absent (unexcused) from two consecutive meetings will automatically be placed on probation.  The third unexcused absence will result in the member being dismissed.

 

Section 3.         The discipline procedure for violators such as but not limited to fighting, possession of illegal substances, smoking on school grounds, insubordination, and civil offenses shall be a warning on the first offense plus a number of hours of service determined by the faculty council and advisor to be completed in one semester.  The second offense will be cause for dismissal form the National Honor Society as determined by the faculty council.  The advisor, principal and current faculty council reserve the right to determine disciplinary action in all cases and set the number of service hours.

 

Section 4.         Any disciplinary procedure for any violation not mentioned in the constitution will be reviewed by the advisor and the faculty council and precedent will be set with the first case.

ARTICLE XI


EVALUATION OF STUDENT PROFILE INFORMATION SHEETS

 

Section 1.         Character forms must meet a two in all categories to be used in the evaluation process.

 

Section 2.         Students are responsible for all forms being returned to the advisor by the date indicated.  Any forms received after the due date will not be considered.  Emergency situations will be decided upon by the advisor.

 

Section 3.         Students will be evaluated on the information provided only.

 

Section 4.         The areas of leadership, service, community character and school character and school character are worth four points.  The total possible points is sixteen.  A candidate must have a total of ten points with at least one point in the area of service, one point in the area of leadership, two points in the area of community character and two points in the area of school character.  In the area of community character, the extra point comes from having no more than one disciplinary referral or civil offense in the past two years.

 

Section 5.         Three or more serious disciplinary referrals (fighting, smoking on school grounds, insubordination, etc.) or any civil offense may be cause for refusal of membership.  Any such case may be reviewed by the faculty council before the induction ceremony.
